It's resolution season, and I have no doubt that "look after my skin" will be on many people's lists. If this is one of your goals, you need to create sustainable habits that will help you achieve it. Skincare isn’t just about the products you use; it’s about creating a consistent routine that nurtures your skin daily. By incorporating a few simple, effective habits, you can transform your approach to skincare and unlock that healthy, radiant glow you want. Let’s explore six habits that will set you on the right path for 2025!
6 Skincare Habits for Flawless Skin
1. Cleanse Thoroughly
Why? A thorough cleansing routine is the foundation of all good skincare routines. It ensures your skin is clean and free from excess dirt, makeup, and impurities like pollution, which can clog your pores and lead to breakouts and premature ageing.
The Habit: Commit to cleansing your skin thoroughly in 2025 - your skin will thank you! Use a micellar water like Bioderma's best-selling Sensibio H2O in the morning to refresh your skin and remove overnight oil and dirt. In the evening, double cleanse so that all traces of stubborn SPF and waterproof makeup are removed - the Sensibio Cleansing Oil and Foaming Gel are a gentle yet hard-working duo that'll leave your face feeling fresh, comfortable and clean.
2. Hydrate Daily
Why? Hydration is the cornerstone of healthy skin for all skin types - even oily! Optimally hydrated skin will look smoother, more radiant, and more youthful. Environmental factors like the sun and humidity can dry out the skin, so all skincare routines should include a hydrating step.
The Habit: Use a hyaluronic acid serum daily. You can slot this step in after cleansing and toning in the morning and/or night. One of my favourites is La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Hyaluronic Acid Serum. It's made with two types of pure hyaluronic acid: vitamin B5 and madecassoside. This refreshing gel serum will keep your skin hydrated while improving radiance, loss of volume, and elasticity.
3. Use Active Ingredients
Why? Active ingredients will solve your skin concerns. The clue is in its name; they work for your skin. Whether it's correcting signs of ageing, dullness or soothing irritation, active ingredients are scientifically proven to deliver results.
The Habit: Incorporate active ingredients into your morning and evening routine. Consider your skin concern and find an active ingredient proven to help correct it. Here are a few of my go-to active ingredients:
- Vitamin C helps correct hyperpigmentation and dullness and is best used in the morning. It's a powerful antioxidant that protects skin from free radicals.
- Retinol (a type of retinoid) is loved for its anti-ageing qualities. It should be used at night because it's sensitive to sunlight and becomes less effective.
- Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, soothes skin and helps reduce inflammation. It is great for all skin types, but especially those experiencing redness or irritation.
4. Exfoliate Regularly
Why? Exfoliating removes dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Regular exfoliation will leave your skin looking smooth and glowing and prevent clogged pores, resulting in fewer blemishes.
The Habit: Exfoliate regularly. On average, I recommend exfoliating your skin two to three times a week but listen to your skin. You can choose a physical exfoliator if you prefer a scrub (these work on the skin's surface) or a chemical/liquid exfoliator, which penetrates deeper into the skin (AHAs, BHAs, and PHAs).
5. Mask Weekly
Why? Face masks are usually highly concentrated in actives, vitamins and nutrients, so they are perfect for boosting your skin's health and treating specific short-term skin concerns.
The Habit: Pamper your skin once a week with a face mask. Consider what extra TLC your complexion needs and find a mask that suits that need, whether it's improving radiance or boosting your skin's hydration.
6. Never Skip SPF
Why? SPF protects us from harmful UV rays, which can cause skin cancer and premature ageing.
The Habit: Wear sun protection every day, come rain or shine. Find an SPF formula that works with your skin type and lifestyle and apply it as your last skincare step.
Don't forget...
There's more to achieving healthy skin than skincare and quality products. Remember to:
- Eat a balanced diet.
- Get enough sleep.
- Manage your stress levels.
