Why it's important
Sun protection is an incredibly important step for skin health to protect the skin from UV damage. The sun’s rays can accelerate skin ageing by increasing the likelihood of hyperpigmentation, damaging our skin’s DNA, and destroying collagen fibres. This damage leads to dark spots, lack of firmness, wrinkles, and inflammation.
It is recommended to apply broad spectrum (UVA + UVB) sun protection in the morning and to reapply every 2hrs when exposed to the sun. While there are so many incredible sunscreen formulas on the market, it can be challenging to find the right sun protection product to reapply comfortably throughout the day. That is, until the launch of Caudalie’s Vinosun Protect Invisible High Protection Stick SPF50!
I love how easy it is to re-apply over makeup (yes- over makeup!) with a swipe and a few taps. This is a must-have for your everyday bag and your travel bag thanks to the water-resistant formula!

I always recommend applying a dedicated mineral sunscreen like Antipodes Supernatural SPF50+ Ceramide Silk Facial Sunscreen as the ultimate primer for makeup. Even on cloudy days, SPF is the best way to future-proof your skin – it's the one thing that dermatologists all agree upon!
Don’t rely on your makeup for sun protection – it rarely offers enough coverage.

Why it's important
SPF (sun protection factor) matters – especially if your skin is sensitive to sunlight exposure. SPF stands for sun protection factor and indicates by what factor your time in the sun can be multiplied before your skin develops a redness and risk of damage. Put simply, SPF Factor x 5 minutes. Using an SPF 100 would allow 5 mins x SPF 100 = 500 minutes of sun protection as a rule.
SPF has a direct impact on protection against actinic keratosis. Actinic keratosis is the most common pre-cancer on the skin caused by UV damage - potentially progressing into non-melanoma skin cancer if left untreated. But the right sun protection can make all the difference. The higher the SPF, the more UVB-rays are blocked out – which are a major cause of cell damage.
The more UVB-rays are blocked out, the less cell damage the skin will accumulate during sun exposure. An SPF 100 for example blocks out about 99% of UVB-rays. Additionally, the high SPF 100 can also compensate for sunscreen under-application.

The delicate skin of babies and young children is particularly sensitive to external factors, including solar radiation. That is why sun protection for the youngest should go hand in hand with care for the skin's hydrolipid barrier and its regenerative abilities.
The Pharmaceris Sun Protection Cream for Babies and Children SPF50+ is an advanced product designed for the highest level of safety and effectiveness in the care of children's skin.

SPF measures UVB protection, which prevents burning, but it’s UVA rays that do the deeper, long-term damage. At Ultrasun, our products are designed with lamellar technology — a unique formulation method that ensures an even, long-lasting layer of protection that works with the skin rather than sitting heavily on top. It’s ideal for sensitive skin types and ensures fewer reapplications are needed throughout the day
Applying SPF every morning, like brushing your teeth, is one of the simplest and most effective ways to futureproof your skin. We want everyone to understand that effective sun protection doesn’t have to be complicated — it just needs to be consistent.

Why it's important
Some people struggle with sunscreen pilling on the skin or it leaving an unnatural sheen to the skin. This often happens when sunscreen is applied to dry skin. To counteract this I recommend applying sunscreen directly after showering/ cleansing but before getting dressed to benefit from the skin being slightly damp. This way the sunscreen is less likely to pill and also more likely to finish/ dry down without leaving a white caste or an unnatural looking sheen. For reapplication during the day if you have very dry skin, you can mist the skin first with a thermal water such as Vichy then re- apply a hydrating fluid sunscreen like Capital Soleil.
Sunscreens that contain antioxidants like Vichy Capital soleil, hugely reduce the impact the combination of Sun (UV) exposure and Pollution. This is because antioxidants reduce the harmful effect reactive oxygen species (ROS) found in pollution have on the skin. These deleterious effects are made more potent when combined with UV exposure and contribute to hyperpigmentation and collagen degradation leading to premature skin ageing in the form of dark spots and wrinkles.
Sunscreen is designed to grip to the skin for several hours. For people who use makeup, that Sunscreen grip will also act like a primer so you can streamline the morning routine (and save some money) by using a hydrating sunscreen like Vichy’s Capital Soleil
Sunscreen is a really valuable part of your skincare routine whether that’s for prevention of premature ageing, reducing skincare risk or as part of a skin condition.

Why it's important
One of the biggest misconceptions about SPF if that chemical filters are bad for your skin and should be avoided.SPF protection can be given from either chemical or mineral filters or a combination of both. Safe Chemical UV filters absorb UV rays whereas Mineral Filters reflect UV rays.
Another misconception may be that SPF 50 Creams are thick in texture and aren’t suitable for daily use. Anthelios UV Mune 400 SPF 50+ is a lightweight fluid texture that even sits well underneath make-up and is suitable for daily use.
The rule of thumb is that if you are inside and can read a book without having to turn on artificial light then there are enough UV rays getting to you that you should be wearing SPF Protection.

Why it's important
Daily UV exposure accelerates skin ageing, contributes to hyperpigmentation, and breaks down collagen - leading to fine lines, dark spots, and a loss of firmness.
When selecting a sunscreen, look for one that offers broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection, combined with antioxidants like Vitamin E to help defend against pollution and free radical damage. Ingredients that support the skin barrier, such as thermal water or soothing actives, can further enhance resilience and hydration during sun exposure.
If you’re spending time at the beach or in the sea, it’s also important to choose an ocean-friendly formula - one that has been tested to be safe for marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and plankton. Opting for a sunscreen that protects both your skin and the environment is a simple but meaningful step towards more conscious sun care.

Why it's important
We often think of sun damage in terms of UVB rays, as we can see the tan they leave behind. However, UVA rays are actually the most dangerous. Unlike UVB, UVA rays can penetrate through windows and glass, reaching your skin even when you're indoors or in the car. These rays damage collagen and elastin fibers deep within the skin, leading to premature aging. That’s why wearing a daily SPF is the best anti-aging gesture you can make for your skin, a protection from the unseen damage that happens every day.

Mineral sunscreens are the go-to choice for those with sensitive skin, especially for people who may be allergic to chemical filters. However, the challenge with mineral sunscreens is the white cast left by the active ingredients, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. While these filters are highly effective, they can create a visible residue.
At Institut Esthederm, we’ve perfected the formula to eliminate the white cast without sacrificing protection with Institut Esthederm No Sun Mineral High Tolerance Protective Sheer Fluid SPF50+.
I recommend this product as the safest protection for sensitive skin, especially post-aesthetic procedures like lasers, peels, and injections. The SPF 50+ provides high, reliable protection during recovery, helping shield the skin from harmful UV rays while it heals.

Protecting your skin from the sun is crucial – not just against sunburn, but the cumulative damage from UVA/UVB that causes aging and increases health risks. Add to that, the sun emits blue light far more intensely than our screens (100-1000x!)
The sun's blue light is an astounding 100-1000x more potent than any screen!

Here's the lowdown on what our experts consistently emphasised as the non-negotiables for smart sun protection:
Daily, Year-Round Application is KEY: This was a big one! Every expert stressed that UV rays, particularly the ageing kind (UVA), are present year-round, even on cloudy days or when you're indoors near windows. Making SPF a daily habit, like brushing your teeth, is the most impactful step you can take for your skin's future.
Go Broad-Spectrum and Don't Skimp on SPF: Look for "broad-spectrum" on the label, meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. While SPF 30 is the minimum recommended, many experts lean towards SPF 50 (or even 100 in specific cases) for enhanced protection, acknowledging that most people don't apply enough sunscreen to reach the stated SPF level. Higher SPF offers a better buffer.
Reapplication is Crucial When Outdoors: Sunscreen wears off! Experts consistently advised reapplying every two hours when you are exposed to the sun, and immediately after swimming or sweating. Don't rely on a single morning application if you're spending time outside.
Sunscreen is Your Best Anti-Ageing Product: Beyond preventing sunburn, the experts highlighted that consistent SPF use is the most effective way to prevent premature ageing signs like wrinkles, dark spots, and loss of firmness caused by UV damage.
Consider Your Skin's Needs and Lifestyle: While the core rules apply to everyone, experts also touched on finding the right type of SPF for you – whether it's a mineral formula for sensitive skin, a lightweight fluid for easy reapplication over makeup, or a product offering defense against pollution and blue light.

"Broad-spectrum" means the sunscreen protects your skin from both types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation: UVB rays (which primarily cause sunburn) and UVA rays (which penetrate deeper and contribute to aging, wrinkles, and dark spots). Experts strongly recommend broad-spectrum protection because you need defense against both types of rays for complete sun safety and to prevent long-term damage
Yes, there's a difference in the percentage of UVB rays blocked. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%, and SPF 100 blocks about 99%. While the percentage difference seems small, experts often recommend SPF 50 or higher because many people don't apply enough sunscreen to achieve the full protection indicated on the label. Using a higher SPF can help compensate for this under-application and provide a greater margin of safety, especially for those with sensitive skin or higher risk. SPF 100 is particularly recommended for very high exposure or specific skin concerns like preventing actinic keratosis.
The general guideline, often mentioned by health authorities that experts align with, is to apply about a teaspoon for your face and neck, and a shot glass full (about one ounce) for your body. Applying too little significantly reduces the stated SPF protection, which is why using an SPF 50+ can offer better real-world protection even if you don't apply the perfect amount.
The consistent expert advice is to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours when you are exposed to the sun. This is because sunscreens can break down or be removed by factors like sweat and friction, even if you're not swimming. Reapplication ensures continuous protection throughout the day.
