Why It's Escentual

French Riviera has been one of the few summer citrus fragrances that actually lasts, and it built a following on exactly that. Intense French Riviera keeps the bright opening intact but swaps the original's pine for Cambodian oud and Virginian cedar, which pulls the whole thing later into the day.

The result is less beach and more evening. If you already wear the original and want a version for dinner rather than daytime, that's what this is. As an extrait, it also runs to ten hours or more, with the citrus still detectable at the end, which is unusual.

What It Smells Like

Salty, sunlit and surprisingly dark underneath. Sicilian lemon, tangerine and orange open it, with ginger and black pepper adding a dry heat that the original didn't have. It reads as a proper citrus rather than a soapy fresh.

The heart is where it earns the name: sea spray and iodine give it that mineral, just-out-of-the-water quality, softened by mimosa and tiaré, then Cambodian oud, cedar and vetiver root arrive underneath and add weight. Sea salt, ambergris and white musk finish it close to the skin, warm and slightly saline rather than fresh.

How To Wear It

This is an Extrait de Parfum, so the concentration is high and the alcohol content is lower than an eau de parfum. It sits closer to the skin in the first hour but keeps going long after a fresh fragrance would have gone. Two sprays to pulse points is plenty. Warm weather lifts the citrus and the salt, so it performs best in heat despite the darker base.

The Perfumer

Created by Pierre Montale with his daughter Amélie, who grew up on the Riviera and now develops Mancera fragrances alongside him. The original was built from her memory of running the Esterel trails; this version came after the house opened its Cannes boutique, with Pierre adding the contrast and the salt.

From a Morning Run to a Bestseller… Some places never let go. The French Riviera is one of them. Cannes, the Esterel hills, pine trees, golden light, sea spray… this is where Amélie grew up. An artist at heart and born on these shores, she now dreams up Mancera creations alongside her father, Pierre Montale. Years later, on a quiet morning run along those familiar trails, something stirred.

The sunshine, the scent of pines, the salty breeze … all came rushing back. A spark, a wave of emotion. Back at the lab, she shared this vision with Pierre. Together, they imagined a fragrance: solar, elegant, universal. That moment became French Riviera, a radiant creation and soon a House favourite. But the story did not end there. As Mancera opened its first Montale & Mancera boutique in Cannes, the idea of a deeper, more textured version felt inevitable.

Pierre and Amélie returned to the source. He added contrast, intensity, and of course, his famous pinch of salt. Amélie, a lover of unisex fragrances who often wears those crafted for men, brought her own sensibility, pushing the Riviera dream into new territory.
