How To Make Sure Your Lipstick Looks Perfect Everytime
Share
Do you find your lipstick never looks ‘perfect’? It can happen to the best of us. Getting your lipstick to look perfect every time is tough, especially when you’re rushing to get the kids out of the house, or when you’ve not got a mirror to apply your touch-up.
After hours of research, and countless ‘you’ve got lipstick on your teeth’ embarrassments, I’ve developed the necessary routine to achieving a polished lipstick look every time.
FYI: Sometimes, we have to be high maintenance to be low maintenance. It just works!
1. Lipstick Tips To Try Before You Start Your Makeup
More preparation = better results.
1. Exfoliate and moisturise lips: The night before, or before applying lipstick, ensure your lips are smooth and well-hydrated. Use a lip scrub to gently exfoliate dead skin, and then apply a hydrating lip balm to keep your lips moisturised.
Tip: Use a soft toothbrush if you don’t have a lip scrub to buff away dead skin. Just make sure it’s not one you brush your teeth with.
2. Choose the right formula:
Just like you pick out your outfit before you head out, it’s essential to do the same with your lipstick. Different lip colour formulas have different finishes, so pick one that suits your itinerary.
Matte lipsticks are great for long days and nights out as they are more long-lasting but can be drying, so carry a lip balm. Tip: Matte lipsticks give a better colour payoff than a lip brush when applied from the bullet.
Satin, high-shine lipsticks may require more frequent touch-ups but are less messy if you need to apply without a mirror, and they’re more comfortable.
2. Lipstick Tips For During Your Makeup
1. Use a lip primer: A lip primer can create a smooth base for your lipstick and help it last longer. It also prevents feathering and bleeding of the colour, which is a common lipstick problem.
2. Conceal and define: If you want a sharp and precise look, apply concealer or foundation on your lips before putting on lipstick. This will create a clean canvas and make the lipstick colour pop.
3. Outline with lip liner: Lip liner is your best friend for creating a well-defined lip shape and preventing lipstick from bleeding. Choose a lip liner that matches your lipstick or is a shade darker. Start by outlining your natural lip shape and then fill in the entire lip area with the liner to create a good base for the lipstick.
Tip: If the lip colour is bold, apply lipstick first then line your lips after for a cleaner result!
4. Layer and blot: After applying the first layer of lipstick, blot your lips with a tissue. Then, apply a second layer for increased longevity and intensity.
5. Clean up mistakes: If you make any mistakes while applying lipstick, use a concealer or makeup remover on a small, flat brush to clean up the edges and perfect the lines.
3. Lipstick Tips For When You’ve Left The House
1. Prevent teeth stains: To avoid getting lipstick on your teeth, after applying your lipstick, put your index finger in your mouth, close your lips around it, and then pull your finger out. This will remove any excess lipstick that could transfer onto your teeth.
2. Maintain it: To make your lipstick last longer throughout the day, avoid rubbing your lips together too much, especially with matte formulas, as it can cause the colour to wear off unevenly.
