Our Favourite Spring 2021 Makeup Trends & How To Wear Them

I’m ready for spring. Lighter evenings, sunnier spells, and a new season to inspire my beauty routine. It’s the change of scenery we all need. With that in mind, I asked Beauty Journalist and Confidence Coach Hattie Sloggett to join me on #NightInWithEscentual. We shared our favourite trends for the months ahead to inspire your makeup bag. From barely-there bases to colourful lips and cheeks, this spring is all about embracing the skin you’re in, and having fun with it!

1. Your Skin But Better

If you thought you’d be dusting off your full coverage foundation for post-lockdown events, think again. The Spring/Summer 2021 runways confirmed that natural-looking skin is here to stay; Victoria Beckham and Jason Wu were two of many fashion designers who gave their model’s faces a ‘your skin but better’ effect.

The runways aren’t the only reason I know this trend is a keeper, though. We’ve seen a flurry of new bases launching that confirm this too. The standout is the Givenchy Prisme Libre Foundation; this medium coverage foundation has a natural, glow-boosting formula, provides all-day hydration, and contains 97% natural ingredients. Rather than mask your complexion, Prisme Libre enhances its natural beauty, both instantly and overtime.

2. Smoky Bedroom Eyes

If you’re an amateur at smoky eyes, this trend will have you jumping for joy. Forget precision or neat blends; the ‘bedroom eyes’ effect is smudgy, messy, and should look lived in. Chanel and Dior mastered this on their S/S 2021 runways, opting to keep the face and lips pared-back to allow the eyes to stand out.

The trick behind achieving this effect is to go for it! Opt for one eyeshadow all around the eyes, close to the lash line and smudge it out. If you’re wary of dark colours, rosy hues and plums are set to be everywhere this season; any of the Shiseido Essentialist Eye Palettes are a perfect choice.

3. Bright Lips

I know what you’re thinking; bold lips when we’re all still wearing masks? But, hear me out. Not only were the runways awash with bright lips (Versace and Dolce &Gabbana were two of my favourites), but social channels like Tik Tok and Instagram confirm that colourful lips are the in-thing this season. From vivid reds to coral-toned oranges, it seems as though people are ready to have fun with makeup again, and I’m here for it.

4. Dewy Highlighter

Hand-in-hand with the ‘your skin but better’ trend is the ‘dolphin skin’ trend. Made famous by makeup artist Mary Phillips, this look is all about achieving gleaming skin that appears as if it has just stepped out of the water. Many compare it to the glass skin trend; however, glass skin is more skincare focused, while dolphin skin is a makeup trend. To achieve it, mix a little oil with your foundation and strobe with a high-pigment cream highlighter (Urban Decay Disco Stick is fantastic for achieving this result).

5. Rosy Blush

We can take away from this season’s trends that everyone wants to look healthy and youthful. So, it comes as no shock that flushed, rosy cheeks are the last trend I’d like you to take note of. Blush is back, and there’s lots of it; shows like Erderm had their models sporting blush across their nose, eyes and cheekbones; the result is fresh and playful. To try this look, apply a liquid or cream blusher (Shiseido Minimalist WhippedPowder Blush is my go-to) to the apple’s of your cheek and blend upwards. Apply any excess to the bridge of your nose, brow bone, and lips.
