Issey Miyake Fusion d’Issey Extreme Eau de Toilette Review

Review of Issey Miyake Fusion d’Issey Extreme Eau de Toilette

Inspired by the heart of nature in fusion, Fusion d’Issey Extreme takes the original Issey Miyake Fusion one step further. Launched in 2021, the masculine fragrance invites you to dive headfirst into the cool, watery depths where both strength and freshness are pushed to the extreme. Read on to explore this fresh, aromatic and slightly spicy woody fragrance for men.

This Fragrance Smells Like…

Designed by master perfumer, Nathalie Lorson – who is behind the original Fusion d’Issey – Issey Miyake Extreme adds a hot new spicy facet to the solar fern fragrance, taking the original scent to new heights. Playing with absolute contrasts found within the natural world – specifically the intense freshness of the deep sea versus the searing heat of magma – Fusion d’Issey Extreme Eau de Toilette opens with a wave of freshness as zesty bergamot is warmed through by warm and spicy cardamom.

The heart carefully balances fresh peppermint with the verticality of a bright mineral solar accord that is the signature of Fusion d’Issey. Finally, the unique union of soft sandalwood and musky-earthy patchouli warm through on the skin.

What’s The Story Behind This Scent?

When it comes to this Extreme edition, it’s quite clear to see the ties to the original fragrance; in fact, if it weren’t for the word ‘EXTREME’ printed along the front, you’d be forgiven for mistaking this for the original. The entire collection is inspired by the natural phenomenon of volcanoes; the spicy but yet still effortlessly fresh fragrance mimics the fiery nature of volcanoes, while the refreshing facets recall its mineral-rich properties once cooled, which benefit surrounding landscapes through agriculture.

The natural theme doesn’t stop there, though. Issey Miyake’s fragrance also has a sustainable edge to it as the fresh-spicy cardamom is obtained through an upcycling process to convert waste materials or useless products into new, high materials.

You Will Love This If…

If you’re a fan of Fusion Extreme’s predecessor, but you’re after a slightly bolder, hotter version, this will be right up your street.

This Perfume Smells Similar To:

Of course, this Eau de Toilette shares a very similar DNA to Issey Miyake Fusion d’Issey Extreme EDT. But where you had a slightly more tropical feel in the start of that scent – thanks to lemon and cool coconut water – this fragrance offers a brighter but infinitely hotter take, all thanks to sunny bergamot and spiced cardamom.

Is Fusion d’Issey Extreme Unisex?

I can admittedly see why it’s been marketed as a fragrance for men, due to its spicy, aromatic and woody feel, but it definitely has universal appeal.

What’s The Longevity Like?

Don’t be put off by the Eau de Toilette concentration; it lasted well over six hours for me, so it can rival any Eau de Parfum in my opinion!

What’s Special About The Bottle?

Held in a smooth, elegant vertical bottle that riffs on the contrasts between polished deep blue glass and at its centre, radiant light – it looks just like a streak of light flicking on the sea. The iconic black cap that fans of the original EDT will instantly recognise is just as sharply faceted as before, echoing the shape of an obsidian stone. I love that the cap has been designed to mimic an obsidian stone as it ties into the volcanic theme perfectly; this stone is a naturally-occurring volcanic glass that forms when lava cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. It fractures easily to create sharp edges, just like the sleek black lid of Fusion d’Issey Extreme. To round off the volcanic concept, vivid orange lettering evokes molten lava.
