Fight The Frizz

Earlier this week, I got caught in a torrential rainstorm. It was the kind of rain that soaks you to the bone in 10 seconds flat. I didn’t have an umbrella – not very British, I know – so my only defence was to put my head down and run as fast as my 4-inch-heeled ankle boots would take me.
My hair turns frizzy at even a hint of moisture – so by the time I had reached my destination, my locks (carefully washed, blow-dried and styled that morning) resembled little more than a birds nest. That look may be fashionable this season (Swiss designer Saro’s Spring/Summer 2011 relied heavily on the look), but it doesn’t translate well to the real world – especially when you are on your way to an important meeting.
Since that fateful morning, I have made it my mission to find a solution to frizz. So I phoned my favourite stylist and colourist Jo Hansford and asked her for top tips on how to deal with frizz disasters over the cold, wet months ahead.
“If you are prone to frizzy hair, it’s always advisable to carry tubes of gel and serum in your handbag,” she told me. “If you get caught in a rain shower, mix the same amount of gel and serum together in the palm of your hand and pat sparingly over your hair. Run your hands through your hair very lightly. The serum will de-frizz and the gel will re-set your hair.”
Once I was armed with her words of wisdom, I set about finding the perfect products for the job. The gel that I will be adding to the depths of my handbag is Sexy Hair Short Sexy Hair Hard Holding Gel, £9.60. Not only reserved for those with cropped hair (mine is past my shoulders), the strong-hold gel gives a sleek, polished look to wet hair. Better still, the tube is only 150ml, so isn’t too heavy or bulky to carry around.
The serum I will be teaming it with is Schwarzkopf Professional BC Bonacure Styling Treat Shine Serum, £7.55 – which instantly tames frizz, static, and flyaway hair. I’m a big fan of the BC Bonacure range, as it’s intelligent yet affordable – and this 50ml tube is perfect for styling on the go.
It sounds strange, but I’m quite looking forward to the next time the heavens open, so that I can take Jo Hansford’s advice and try out the dynamic duo.
