After eighteen years navigating the beauty landscape – from the shop floor to now – I've learned a thing or two about what you truly need. At Escentual, I'm here to bring that experience directly to you, offering expert advice to achieve your personal beauty goals.

Clarins Cryo Mask promises to firm, lift and tighten in only ten minutes.

What’s cool is that this is Clarins’ first-ever product inspired by the healing benefits of cold therapy (Cryotherapy), and what it can do for the skin. Being honest, this is what drew me in. Did it live up to my expectations? Let’s find out.

Key Information

The Clarins Cryo-Flash Cream Mask is a 10-minute firming treatment inspired by cryotherapy. Its Cryo-Starter technology cools skin by 4 degrees, triggering a calcium flash that renews the epidermis from within — visibly lifting, tightening, and smoothing fine lines in a single use

Suitable for normal, dry, and combination skin, it's formulated with over 93% natural-origin ingredients, including cooling mint-derived cryo molecules and radiance-boosting Evening Primrose extract sourced organically in France.

The glass jar is made from 40% recycled glass. Use once or twice a week in the evening for a therapist-grade result at home.

  • Cream mask
  • Don’t rinse it off
  • Targets lack of firmness.
  • Suitable for Normal, Dry, Combination and Oily skin.
  • Use 2-3 times of week before evening skincare routine.

What I Expected:

When I first heard about Clarins Cryo Flash Mask back in 2022, I instantly thought, how does it compare to Charlotte Tilbury’s Cyro-Recovery Mask? I didn’t see it physically, but I expected it to be either a gel texture or sheet mask. Based on the name, I expected it to feel cooling, target the ageing process, and help with puffiness. I expected the application method to be complex, but I was wrong.

How Was It Different?

Firstly the face mask is a cream, and the application is easy. You put it onto clean skin, leave it on, and tissue it off. The cooling sensation is way more intense than I would have thought, especially when you come into contact with air from moving with it on – the feeling intensifies. It targets ageing and helps skin look glowier than without using it. I then went down a cryotherapy rabbit hole to find the actual definitions and how Clarins Cryo-Starter tech differs from what’s out there.

Traditional Cryotherapy:

Cryotherapy, sometimes known as cold therapy, is the local or general use of low temperatures in medical therapy. Cryotherapy may be used to treat a variety of tissue lesions.

  • Treats skin disease and has been used for over 100 years.
  • Low temperatures freeze and kill diseased areas of the skin
  • Also used to destroy cancer cells.

Clarins Cryotherapy

  • Decreased skin temperature by 4°C to encourage skin renewal
  • Cooled by 4°C, the skin undergoes a spontaneous calcium flash, sending a shot of calcium to the heart of each keratinocyte cell – renewing the epidermis from within.

Who’s It Best For?

If you keep picking out your fine lines and wrinkles in the mirror and are looking for an instant solution, Clarins’ cryo mask will give you smoother results visually. Physically it tingles and makes everything feel more taught too.

What Does It Do?

Clarins Say:

  • Instant tightening
  • Overtime lifting
  • Making your skin glow

My thoughts:

It’s a firming mask treatment that smooths away fine lines, speeds up collagen synthesis, and I would say, makes everything look better in just 10 minutes. As you can see from my before and after below, my skin looks brighter, less red and puffy.

How Does It Do It?

Clarins use their Cryo Starter tech, which is a duo molecule containing:

  • Thermal activation from mint extracts for anti ageing prevention, you feel the instant cryo-tightening effect.
  • Biological activation from evening primrose extract increases the calcium level in the skin, boosting collagen synthesis.

Key Ingredients that aren’t shouted out on the product:

  • Antioxidants: Tocopheryl Acetate, Tocopherol – these protect the skin from free radical damage.
  • Glycerin – to replenish moisture and keep skin soft.

Will It Work For Me?

Yes, make sure you follow these steps for more effective results:

  • Apply to clean skin.
  • Use sunscreen the following morning.
  • Make sure you use it two or three times a week.
  • Apply your normal skincare routine after using it.

How Do I Use It?

Apply a thick layer to the entire clean and dry face, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 10 minutes, then remove the excess with cotton pads or gloves soaked in toner. To enhance and maintain the fresh effect on the face, place in the refrigerator beforehand. technique after 10 mins two hands, use the heel of your hand

  1. from chin following the facial over.
  2. from corner of mouth to middle of ears.
  3. from bottom of the nose to the temples.
  4. from the middle of the forehead to the sides.

What Does The Cryo Mask Feel Like?

In terms of texture, it feels like a cream. When you put it on your skin, your skin feels cool, almost like how your mouth feels after mouthwash, fresh, cool and clean.

What Does It Look Like?

When you open the jar, you see its cream, whippy texture. The mask is a bluey-green colour too.

What Does It Smell Like?

The Cryo mask has a slight floral menthol smell, which makes sense; the key technology is made from cryo molecules derived from mint and evening primrose.

Popular Questions Asked About Clarins

Can I use this mask if I have sensitive skin or rosacea?

Because the intense 7-degree cooling sensation is powered by an M.G.A. molecule (a heavy menthol derivative), several users with highly sensitive skin report experiencing an immediate burning sensation or severe facial redness rather than a "refreshing" chill. Anyone prone to severe redness or broken capillaries should patch-test this product first.

Do I actually need to rinse it off with water?

Clarins officially recommends smoothing it on for 10 minutes and then gently wiping away the excess with a cotton pad or a cloth soaked in toner—leaving the residue on the skin to continue working. However, if you plan to apply heavy makeup immediately after or have oily skin, a light rinse with warm water prevents the menthol oils from making your base slip.

Can I apply this mask around my eyes to depuff dark circles?

Absolutely avoid the eye area. Because of the high concentration of the menthol derivative, the vapors alone can cause your eyes to water or sting if applied too close to the orbital bone. For eye puffiness, pair it with a dedicated tool or Clarins’ Total Eye Gel instead.

Where does this fit into my routine, and how often should I use it?

Use it 1 to 2 times a week on freshly cleansed and toned skin before you apply any serums or moisturizers. Because it tightens pores and acts like an instant primer, it is best used as a morning pick-me-up or right before a special event rather than right before bed.

Does it need to be kept in the fridge to work?

No, it does not require refrigeration. The formula is designed to activate chemically upon contact with the skin's natural heat, triggering the cooling mechanism entirely on its own at room temperature. (Though popping it in the fridge anyway won't hurt if you want an extra icy jolt!)

Can I use Retinol or Vitamin C right after using this mask?

It is best to avoid aggressive actives immediately afterward. The mask triggers a biological reaction known as a "calcium flash" to rush nutrients to the skin's surface and tighten pores. Because your skin's microcirculation is heavily stimulated, your skin barrier may temporarily be more permeable. Layering a potent retinol, high-percentage Vitamin C, or strong exfoliating acids (AHAs/BHAs) right after can lead to increased irritation or chemical burning. Stick to a soothing, basic moisturizer or a barrier-supporting serum (like Clarins Double Serum) directly after use.
