Fragrance is an incredibly powerful thing. Not only can it lift and alter your mood, but it can also remind you of a certain time in your life – your childhood, the first fragrance you bought, or maybe even the day you got engaged.
Here at Escentual, we love hearing what fragrance means to people, and we love sharing our scent stories too. So, we thought we’d share some of our favourite fragrances that make us feel nostalgic with you.
Keep reading to find out which six scents will always have a special place in our hearts as we reveal the memories we will always associate with them…
1. Issey Miyake A Drop d’Issey
Fragrance Pick: Issey Miyake A Drop d’Issey Eau de Parfum
Why Does This Fragrance Make You Feel Nostalgic? A Drop d’Issey reminds me of a wonderful memory, my engagement. I was on holiday in Norway and wearing this fragrance when my now fiancé asked me to marry him in the middle of a snowstorm. It was magical. Now, every time I smell A Drop d’Issey’s floral-almondy scent, I’m right back there, saying yes!
2. YSL Opium
Fragrance Pick: Yves Saint Laurent Opium Eau de Parfum
Why Does This Fragrance Make You Feel Nostalgic? My mam’s signature fragrance has been Yves Saint Laurent Opium for as long as I can remember – so, for me, it smells like my childhood. As soon as I spray YSL Opium, memories of my mum tightly holding my hand as we walk to church in our Sunday best come flooding back. As I enjoy the spicy warmth of the scent, I also think back fondly to special occasions when my mam wore Opium when she was feeling confident and at her best, which makes me feel happy, safe and comforted.
3. Jimmy Choo
Fragrance Pick: Jimmy Choo Eau de Parfum
Why Does This Fragrance Make You Feel Nostalgic? This was one of the first fragrances I owned when I was younger, and it reminds me of so many fond memories. As Jimmy Choo is a designer-turned-fragrance house, it made me feel confident, stylish and empowered as a young woman whenever I wore this fragrance. I was – and I still am – obsessed with animal prints, so I had to keep the perfume with its box. Whenever I smell Jimmy Choo Eau de Parfum now, it always reminds me of my younger self.
4. GIVENCHY L’Interdit
Fragrance Pick: GIVENCHY L’Interdit Eau de Parfum
Why Does This Fragrance Make You Feel Nostalgic? It was hard to decide on a fragrance that opitomises nostalgia for me because there are so many things that make me nostalgic; some scents hark back to my childhood, or bring about a more recent memory. Ultimately, though, I chose to go with the fragrance that reminds me of my Mum.
L’Interdit is (one of) her signature scents – she loves vanilla-y, floral fragrances that offer something a little different – and L’Interdit EDP definitely does that! Probably due to the sweetness of the pear at the opening juxtaposed with the white florals in the heart, before a delicious creamy dry down.
I actually wear the Rouge iteration myself as it’s got an addictive spiciness that I absolutely love, but it’s still very much a L’Interdit fragrance, so it still reminds me of my Mum.
5. Anna Sui Sui Dreams
Fragrance Pick: Anna Sui Sui Dreams Eau de Toilette
Why Does This Fragrance Make You Feel Nostalgic?
All it takes is one spray of this to take me back to my childhood, watching my sister apply too much pink blush and carrying Sui Dreams on her pinky as if it was an actual handbag.
My family work in pharmacy, and Sui Dreams was one of the scents you could buy from the locked cabinet. I remember going into my mum’s work, and always staring at all the perfumes, making endless lists in my head of the ones I wanted to try; Sui Dreams being one. When Kendall came home with it; she dowsed herself in it, and was so proud wearing it. It made me love it even more. We had separate bedrooms, but I always managed to sneak the bottle into mine when she wasn’t looking.
To this day, I love how fun it is, from the fashion-inspired handbag bottle to the fruity, aqua blue scent. It’s still a gorgeous scent in my eyes; a true icon. I still get compliments on it too.
6. Marc Jacobs Daisy
Fragrance Pick: Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau de Toilette
Why Does This Fragrance Make You Feel Nostalgic? Marc Jacobs Daisy EDT was my very first designer fragrance; it’s youthful, sunny and elegant. There was nothing I loved more than collecting the Daisy fragrances – from Honey to Dot, I had them all!
The fruity nuances and warm vanilla musk of Daisy Eau de Toilette, in particular, remind me of my teens, and perhaps it sparked my later love for solar scents.
