If there was ever a good time for a scent switch, it’s a new season. Not that we need one, of course. Traditionally, warm, smoky perfumes dominate autumn, but this year, it’s rose! Having scoured our new fragrances section, I spotted that many of our latest releases are centred on this traditional note. So, whether you’re a huge fan of rose or are keen to find one that’ll work for you, here are four niche rose perfumes that’ll ensure you spend the next few months smelling incredible…

1. The Spicy Rose Perfume: Acqua di Parma Luce di Rosa

Luce di Rosa is a spicy rose perfume that's perfect for anyone looking for a floral scent with an edge. Most rose fragrances concentrate on the flower, but when you smell Luce di Rosa, you'll also get hints of the stem and leaves. It's  an elegant composition that's rosy, green, and sweet(thanks to a touch of honey), and men and women will enjoy wearing it.

2. The Creamy Rose Perfume: Amouage Guidance 46

Guidance 46 is a floral-woody fragrance that exudes confidence and femininity. Master Perfumer Quentin Bisch is the nose behind it (he also created Parfums de Marly Delina), and you can tell; it's unlike any rose aroma I've smelt. It's sweet and creamy and a little fresh, too. The 46 stands for the composition's concentration of perfume oil, so if you're looking for a long-lasting floral, Guidance 46 is it.

3. The Soft Rose Perfume: The Merchant of Venice Moscado

Rose isn’t the main floral note in Moscado, which makes it a great perfume for those who don’t typically like rose fragrances. The scent pairs white florals and white tea with rose to create a fresh, green and slightly powdery composition. Moscado has a softness that reminds me of silk; it's sophisticated and timeless.

4. The Delicate Rose Hair Perfume: Initio Atomic Rose

Already have a rose perfume you love? Here's a hair mist for your collection! The Atomic Rose Hair Perfume has a smooth, spicy rose aroma, plus nourishing ingredients that add body and shine to your hair.

The hair mist is part of INITIO's Carnal Blends range, which contains hedione, a compound proven to stimulate the brain's pleasure receptors, heightening attraction and desire.

What is a niche rose perfume?

A niche perfume is a fragrance from a brand that focuses exclusively on creating unique and high-quality scents, often in small batches. Niche rose perfumes are those that feature rose as a key note but with a distinctive and artistic twist, setting them apart from mass-market fragrances.

Why is rose a good note for autumn perfumes?

While rose is often associated with spring and summer, it's a versatile note that can be blended to create a warm, complex, and sophisticated scent. In autumn perfumes, rose is often paired with notes like spices (cinnamon, clove), woods (sandalwood, oud), or rich accords (leather, amber) to create a cozy, inviting, and long-lasting aroma.

Are rose perfumes only for women?

No, rose perfumes are enjoyed by all genders. While rose is traditionally a feminine note, many modern fragrances for men and women feature rose blended with masculine notes like oud, leather, and spices, creating a balanced and appealing scent for anyone.

How can I make my rose perfume last longer?

To make your perfume last longer, apply it to moisturized skin, especially on pulse points like your wrists, neck, and behind your ears. You can also layer your perfume with a matching body lotion or a neutral, unscented one. Hair perfumes, like the Initio Atomic Rose, are also a great way to extend the longevity of your scent.

What's the difference between a rose Eau de Parfum and a rose Extrait de Parfum?

The main difference is the concentration of perfume oil. An Eau de Parfum (EDP) typically contains 15-20% perfume oil, while an Extrait de Parfum (also known as pure perfume or parfum) has a higher concentration, usually 20-40%. This higher concentration makes Extrait de Parfums like the Amouage Guidance 46 more potent and long-lasting.

I don't usually like rose perfumes. Which one should I try?

If you're new to rose fragrances or have found them too "old-fashioned" in the past, consider trying one that blends rose with other notes to create a more modern scent. The Merchant of Venice Moscado, for example, pairs rose with white florals and white tea, creating a fresh and subtle fragrance that isn't overwhelmingly rosy.

Can I wear these perfumes in other seasons?

Yes, absolutely! While these perfumes are perfect for autumn, they are versatile enough to be worn year-round. For example, the fresh and green notes in The Merchant of Venice Moscado make it a great option for spring, while the spicy warmth of Acqua di Parma Luce di Rosa is well-suited for winter evenings.
