Le Sel d'Issey is the latest fragrance innovation from Issey Miyake. The 2024 release is Master Perfumer, Quentin Bisch's fragrant interpretation of scentless salt. Let's discover more about this unique and intriguing scent...
What Does Le Sel d'Issey Smell Like?
Le Sel d'Issey is a woody-aromatic fragrance that smells clean, fresh and masculine. It has been created to evoke the power and energy of salt, and feels uplifting and energising in the top, while the heart notes take you straight to the seaside with nuances of seaweed extract. The rest of the composition comprises earthy and woody notes that bring depth and intensity to the Eau de Toilette.
What Inspired Le Sel d'Issey?
Perfumer Quentin Bisch drew inspiration from the way salt connects us to nature for this fragrance; the freshness of ocean air or the feeling of salt on your skin after a swim. For Bisch, salt is more than just a mineral; it’s a symbol of life and balance, bringing together the land and the sea. In creating this fragrance, he wanted to capture that refreshing, almost tactile sensation of salt, using light marine notes, airy aldehydes, and a soft, salty touch.
Why You’ll Love Issey Miyake Le Sel d'I:
- Its woody-aromatic fragrance smells clean and fresh.
- Vegan formula made with 95% natural origin ingredients.
- Created by Master Perfumer, Quentin Bisch.
- The refillable bottle is by internationally renowned designer Tokujin Yoshioka.
The Notes:
Top notes are sea salt and ginger.
Heart notes are seaweed and vetiver.
Base notes are cedarwood and oakmoss.
Le Sel d'Issey's Longevity...
Eau de Toilette's typically last around 4-6 hours. I found that Le Sel d'Issey was at the top end of that spectrum. I could still smell it after 6 hours.
"I wanted to create the scent of the exact moment the waves roll back, transitioning between the earth and sea. Salt is the memory left behind by a wave on the earth and on the skin, almost like an imprint." - Master Perfumer, Quentin Bisch

Le Sel d'Issey's Design and Aesthetic...
Le Sel d'Issey's refillable bottle is by internationally renowned designer Tokujin Yoshioka. A long-time Issey Miyake collaborator, Yoshioka wanted Le Sel d'Issey's bottle to 'feel sacred' as salt, known as shio in Japanese, symbolises a sense of purification. The oval bottle has soft edges, a solid clear base that reflects light, and is made from 20% recycled glass. The packaging is made from 10% upcycled seaweed, and its texture is another nod to salt.
