Waterproof Wonders

If there’s a time we need our makeup to be waterproof, it’s summer. Whether it’s sliding off in the heat, getting splashed by waves on holiday, or faced with extra showers as we battle with the elements, our makeup needs to stay put – and if you’ve ever emerged from the sea and noticed everyone staring at your smudged panda eyes, you will understand exactly what I mean…
Finding cosmetics that genuinely don’t run or smudge when faced with a little H20, however, is easier said than done. Over the past few years, I have tried and tested hundreds of products for features I have written – one extreme test involved a liquid liner and a trip to water park (and if you are interested, it did a surprisingly good job). So this week, I thought I would share a few of my personal favourites…
1. MASCARA – Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes Waterproof, £19.50.
I remember when we used to have to sacrifice on quality to get waterproof mascara – but thankfully these days, the top brands are launching water-resisting versions of all their best-selling mascaras. This product is a perfect example of that – an award-winning mascara, which offers long, sultry lashes, but with a formula that really doesn’t budge. I really recommend it.
2. EYE SHADOW – Dior Backstage Eye Show, £18.38.
Eyeshadow isn’t something that I’d usually wear on holiday – but on one particular getaway to the South of France (which is ridiculously glamorous, if you haven’t been), I felt I needed a little more makeup during the day. This product stays put – and there is none of the familiar creasing that I get with other shadows. For an understated look, I love the shades Undressed Beige and Pink Wannabe.
3. LIP PENCIL – Daniel Sandler Automatic Long-Lasting Lip Liner, £9.25.
A lip liner really does need to stay put – otherwise there is little point in bothering. And this silky, Vitamin-E infused pencil by makeup supremo Daniel Sandler is top of my list. It’s waterproof and doesn’t feather on lips, which really is a winning combination.
4. FOUNDATION – Dior Extreme Wear Flawless Makeup SPF25, £27.25.
There are lots of foundations out there that claim to be long-lasting, but few of them live up to my expectations for a base that offers good coverage, lightweight formula, and skin-friendly ingredients – so I was thrilled to discover this beautiful foundation from Dior. There are nine shades (pretty impressive for a base collection) and it really does last longer than other foundations I have tried.
And when you want to take it all off, you need a really good makeup remover – as a splash of water quite clearly isn’t going to remove it. For eyes, I love Clarins Instant Eye Makeup Remover, £12.80, which has a gentle formula, yet swipes away waterproof makeup in an instant. And for face, Vichy Normaderm Deep Cleansing Gel, £10.50, which leaves skin squeaky clean and feeling refreshed.
