Trending Makeup: May 2019

When was the last time you peeked inside your makeup bag? If you haven’t taken stock of the beauty products you own in a little while, now is the perfect time to do just that. The sun is shining, everyone’s boots have been ditched for sandals, and as for me, I’ve started to get freckles on my nose (a sure sign that summer is on its way). So, now more than ever, it seems like the ideal time to switch up my makeup collection and introduce some welcomed newness.
Admittedly, I’m the kind of girl to stick to what she knows, but sometimes change is good, right? Plus, as one of Escentual’s copywriters, I’m always being introduced to the latest releases. So, for this edit, I’m out with the old and in with the new! Keep reading to discover some of my handpicked favourites that I’ve loved lately. Ready to upgrade your beauty collection with the latest and greatest?
#1 The Fuss-Free Glitter
Yves Saint Laurent Sequin Crush Glitter Shot Eyeshadow in 1 Legendary Gold
I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen glitter everywhere at the moment, especially on my Instagram feed – festival season is here! But usually, when it comes to eyeshadows, I don’t stray far from the beaten path (aka matte neutrals). But, there’s something about Sequin Crush that has completely changed my opinion on glitter. The shade I’m wearing, Legendary Gold, is right up my street, so much so that I’ve given it a permanent spot in my beauty bag. Why? It’s not messy thanks to its pressed formula, it’s easy to work with thanks to its non-scratchy texture, and the high-pigment finish is long lasting and comfortable.
I wore this for a whole day in the office and didn’t feel like I was overdoing it. Even after post-work cocktails it still looked freshly applied (crease-free without any fallout, might I add). I also popped a little onto my cheekbones and got compliments on it all night. Pretty impressive for eyeshadow if you ask me; kudos YSL, you’ve converted me.
#2 The ‘IT’ Spray
Urban Decay All Nighter Summer Solstice Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray
Urban Decay is always trending, and no one does setting sprays like they do. So, it should come as no surprise that All Nighter, the holy grail of makeup setting mists, has managed the not-so-simple task of making its way from the beautysphere into everyday life (my friends and family call it, ‘that’ setting spray). And, just in time for Summer, Urban Decay has released an all-new, ‘smells like a summer holiday’ coconut and pineapple-scented version, and I’ve fallen head over heels for it.
It offers the same stay-all-day hold as the original thanks to its clever (unchanged) formula that keeps your makeup looking freshly applied for up to 16 hours without caking or settling in lines. Plus, if you’re a self-confessed fake tanner like me spritz over your freshly-tanned skin to replace that biscuity scent with an uplifting, tropical one. I won’t tell if you won’t!
#3 A Healthy Glow
GIVENCHY Le Saisons Healthy Glow Powder 2.5 Naturel Rose Marbled Edition
The sun is out, and glowing skin is in! So, if a warm and radiant complexion is what you seek, then you might want to pop GIVENCHY Le Saison Healthy Glow Powder on your new beauty wishlist.
If you’ve managed to pry your eyes away from the gorgeous marble design, you might be wondering about what makes this GIVENCHY limited Edition Healthy Glow Powder so good. For starters, its finely milled formula offers buildable coverage (there’s no such thing as being heavy-handed here) and will apply evenly to your face, leaving your skin positively glowing – it’ll be your one-way ticket to a healthy, luminous complexion. Who would have thought a, ‘I just left my facialist’ glow could be so easy?
#4 The Low Maintenance Lipstick
Clarins Joli Rouge Lip Lacquer Lipstick in 705L Soft Berry
Like most beauty addicts, a reliable, longlasting lipstick is essential to me, and if anything should be a staple in your beauty bag right now, it’s Joli Rouge Lip Lacquer by Clarins. As soon as I applied it, I loved how nourishing it felt (its formula contains a combination of waxes and comforting plant oils that will keep your lips feeling juicy and plump as-can-be). I’ve been wearing this lipstick day-in, day-out, and I love its creamy finish (your lips won’t feel tight or uncomfortable), plus the high-shine finish is completely in keeping with the trends!
To summarise; it’s creamy with a glossy finish, super-hydrating and it will leave behind bold, longlasting colour. My favourite of all the shades if Soft Berry, a muted plum-pink that’s fast becoming my favourite everyday nude lip.
#5 A Blushing Bronzer
GUERLAIN Terracotta Route Des Indes Bronzer & Blush Powder
A bronzer is a year-long affair – who would we be without a daily dose of faux sun-kissed goodness? But, much like how I switched my side parting to the centre many moons ago, the days that I would douse my face in bronzer are long gone. Nowadays, I’ve adopted the ‘less is more’ mantra, and so, when it comes to a bronzing powder, I want something that’s going to enhance, add radiance and generally make me feel like I’ve spent the afternoon somewhere sunny. In other words, I don’t want to look orange, I want to look like a golden goddess, and boy does Terracotta Route Des Indes deliver.
Sure, it’s safe to say a tanned glow is always in, but GUERLAIN’s Route Des Indes Blonzer & Blush Powder is particularly special because, as its name suggests, it’s a bronzer and a blush (that smells like vanilla, ylang-ylang, orange blossom might I add). Its pressed powder format contains a touch of pink and shimmering gold within the centre of its paisley pattern design, while its soft texture allows for easy application and blending. The result? A natural, sun-kissed glow that doesn’t look false. I think it’s a great choice for holidays, especially thanks to its wooden compact – it feels sturdy and clicks shut, so you can pop this in your suitcase without fear of it breaking.
