The Seven Sins of Summer

I love summer; the season of holidays, garden parties, and weekend picnics! But it does make the beauty routine a little trickier and more time-consuming. Legs need to be smooth, makeup needs to be waterproof, hair needs to be de-frizzed –the list goes on as long as my summer shopping list…

With so much skin on display, it’s also very easy to make mistakes (and even easier for others to spot them!) So this week, I’ve rounded up the seven beauty sins of summer and shown you how best to avoid them with a few of my favourite products.

1. SUNBURN
This sin is no laughing matter, causing premature ageing and potentially even skin cancer. Avoid it by stashing a bottle of sun cream in your handbag for those impromptu al fresco moments at home or abroad.
Tool: Snowberry Every Day SPF15 Broad Spectrum Lotion, £31 for 50ml.

2. PANDA EYES
Ever emerged from the sea and wondered why everyone is staring? I have – and it’s down to non-waterproof mascara. So if you are heading away on holiday to the beach, make sure you invest in a tube of waterproof mascara before you board that flight.
Tool: Stila Lash Visor Waterproof Mascara, £13.

3. FRIZZY HAIR
If your hair is prone to frizz, you will know increased summer humidity can wreak havoc on your locks. This isn’t a sin – but the products you are using may be… Switch to products that are designed for frizz-prone hair and you will notice a big difference.
Tool: Tigi S-Factor Smoothing Lusterizer for 100ml, £10.48.

4. SHINY COMPLEXION
Changing seasons can alter our skin, making a usually normal complexion feel oily and appear shiny. If your skin is prone to this change, it’s worth adding a mattifying lotion to your skincare regime to keep it matte and blemish-free.
Tool: Clarins Hydra Matte Lotion for Combination Skin, £18.80 for 100ml.

5. STREAKY FAKE TAN
Woken up with streaky fake tan? This can be avoided by making a habit of exfoliating your skin with a high-quality body scrub the day before application, paying particular attention to elbows and knees.
Tool: Occo Motovun No.3 Body Scrub for 175ml, £21.25.

6. SMELLY FEET
Tired, swollen, hot feet often make for smelly feet – it’s one of those annoying things about the season. Luckily, the situation can be resolved quickly and enjoyably, with regular applications of a cooling peppermint-scented foot spray.
Tool: Crabtree & Evelyn La Source Reviving Leg and Foot Mist, £9.60 for 80ml.

7. CHLORINE-TINGED HAIR
If you use summer as the opportunity to rediscover your inner water baby, it is worth investing in a product to protect your hair from the chlorine in the pool. Unprotected, it is liable to turn a nasty shade of green – especially if your hair is naturally fair.
Tool: Philip Kingsley Swimcap for 150ml, £15.55.
