Summer Hair Trends

I have to admit that I rarely bother with my hair. A quick wash and blow-dry every morning is usually the extent of my effort. However, this season I vow to be a bit more creative – and the first place I’ve looked for inspiration is the catwalk.

Summer hair trends are always appealing – usually simple and feminine enough to let the clothes do the talking. This season is no exception, so I’ve rounded up my favourite looks below.

SOFT AND NATURAL

As seen at Emanuel Ungaro, Erdem, Burberry Prorsum and Christopher Kane.

If you have long hair, let it fall over your shoulders in soft, natural waves. Minimal effort is required here – simply blow-dry as usual and then invest in a salt spray or texturiser to define those waves. I like TIGI Catwalk Session Series Salt Spray, £11.40 and Schwarzkopf Professional Osis+ Style Shifters Liquid Texturising Spray, £7.30.

CANDY COLOURS

As seen at Thakoon and Julien Macdonald.

Candy coloured locks have been a trend for a while now – and the spring/summer 2012 catwalks have kept the trend alive. My favourite colours for the season ahead are the softer pastels, including peach, lilac, and rose pink. If you dare to dye, make sure you buy a good colour-saving shampoo to you’re your chosen shade looking vibrant for as long as possible. TIGI Bed Head Colour Combats Colour Goddess Shampoo, £13.80 should be top of your wish list.

SLICK PONY TAILS

As seen at Derek Lam, Dries Van Noten, and Nicole Fahri.

Another trend that has been around for a while is ponytails. This season, it takes on a slicker, more groomed appearance, with hair pulled together at the nape of the neck. Before tying it back, straighten hair until it’s poker-straight and use a smoothing serum to give hair a mirror-shine gloss. Schwarzkopf Professional Essensity Natural Shine Serum, £9.80 is ideal.

PLAITS

As seen at Valentino, Moschino, Peter Pilotto, and Danielle Scutt.

If you’re a fan of plaits, you’re in luck – as the Spring/Summer 2012 catwalks were awash with the style in every possible formation, from sleek plaits at the crown of the head, to thicker, messier fishtails. Whatever style you choose, you need a strong-hold hairspray to keep it in place, such as Sexy Hair Big Sexy Hair Spritz and Stay Non-Aerosol Intense Hold Hairspray, £9.75.

WET LOOK

As seen at Alexandra Wang, Prada, and Alberta Ferretti.

Most of us will do anything to avoid wet-look hair, but this summer it’s one of the hottest trends of the season. It can be pulled off in summer too – think ‘just stepped out of the surf’ and team with minimal makeup and casual clothes. If you want to give the trend a go, you need to get your hands on a wet-look styling product, such as TIGI Catwalk Session Series Wet Look Gel, £9.
