If a sweet Romantic Look isn’t your thing, then we have something a little darker for your Valentine’s Day. The sultry smoky eye is a flattering and directional take on the traditional black smoky eye, substituting matte and dark shades for shimmering metallics and greys.

Dior Gris Gris

Using just one palette, the versatile Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in 034 Gris Gris above, we set to work on the eyes of our model, Lauren. The palette is made up of 5 shades: a shimmering silver in the top left, a steely dark grey in the top right, a pearlescent dove grey in the bottom left corner, a shimmering white in the bottom right, and a matte black with silver glitter in the center.

Eyeshadow Base2

After using the Dior Skinflash Pen in 002 Ivory Glow as a base, buff the dove grey shade (bottom left in the palette) onto the lid up as far as the socket with the Large Eyeshadow Brush. The pearlescent shade has a beautiful sheen, and isn’t too dark.

Contour

Next, create gradually darken the outer third of the eye with the steely grey shade (top right in the palette) and the Medium Eyeshadow Brush, which allows for more control. Don’t worry about making this too perfect, as you can buff and soften hard lines afterwards with a dry brush. Tip: rest tissue underneath the eye when using dark or glittery shades to stop stray pigments from ruining the rest of your make-up.

Add sparkle2

Instead of darkening the socket, we’re aiming for a lighter look by adding silver shimmer (top left in the palette) to the centre third of the eye. Dab the pigment on, and then smoke it out using a dry brush for a flattering diffused effect.

Highlighting The Eye

Lift and brighten the darkness a little further with some strategic highlighting. We applied the pearlescent white shade (bottom right in the palette) beneath the brow bone, in the inner corner of the eye, and a small amount on the lower lash line.

Lining the Eye

Finally, taking the glittery black shade (center of the palette) and the Eyeliner Brush, define the upper lashline and the outer third of the lower lashline. The precision brush can be used to apply gel liner, eyeshadow and dampened eyeshadow really easily thanks to its flat head, while its bristle density picks up the perfect amount of product.

Apply mascara

Finish up with two applications of the Dior Diorshow Extase Mascara, which delivers plump, long and curled lashes – just look how it has transformed Lauren’s eyes! Wiggle the brush through the lower lashes too, making sure to comb through afterwards to avoid overloading them.

Finished Look

And here’s the finished look. The foundation used is the Dior Airflash Spray Foundation buffed into the skin with the Fluid Foundation Full Coverage Brush for a really flawless finish.

Forgo blush in favour of a contoured finish. Take the Dior Nude Tan Sun Powder in 001 Honey and your Cheek Brush, and sweep the colour beneath your cheekbone, from your temple downwards. Be very careful to blend this well – you want to avoid an obvious line of colour.

On the lips we used a combination of the Rouge Dior Nude Lipstick in 169 Grege and the Dior Addict Lip Maximizer for full lips in a shade that compliments the strong eye look.
