Spring/Summer 2011 Hair & Beauty Trends

This, ladies and gents, is my favourite time of year… Not only are the days getting lighter, with the promise of warmer weather on the way, but we also have a whole new selection of seasonal trends to inspire our beauty routines.

And this season, I’m more excited than ever as everything is so easy to wear. No extravagant makeup looks, nor complicated hairstyles – just wearable, pretty trends that we can all try at home.

Here are a few of my favourites:

1. Bright Lipstick
This season is all about colour – and the easiest way to recreate the look is with a bold, bright lip colour. This look was all over the Spring Summer 2011 catwalks – from the brightest pillar-box red at Topshop Unique to the lurid orange pouts at Fendi. You need a shade of high-pigment lipstick, which will stay put as long as you dare to flaunt it.

Try: Dior Rouge Dior Replenishing Lipcolor, £21.50, in Blazing Red, Star Fuchsia, or Red Muse.

2. Ballerina Buns
Inspired by the film ‘Black Swan’, the beauty world has taken the ballerina trend and run with it (or should we say ‘pirouetted’).

The ballerina bun is sleek, pretty, sophisticated, and takes minimum effort to recreate. First, tame flyways by applying serum to damp hair. Then brush hair into a high ponytail, twisting it around itself to create a bun. Finish by securing with Kirby grips and a generous application of hairspray.

Try: Joico Silk Result Sheer Gloss Shine Serum, £9.91 and Tigi Catwalk Your Highness Firm Hold Hairspray, £5.82.

3. Pastel Nail Colours
From the softest pinks, to the palest mint greens, to the creamiest lilacs – this season’s nail trend is all about pastel hues. Models on the Spring Summer 2011 catwalk flaunted their pretty ice-cream nails, from the runways of Isaac Mizrahi to Monique Lhuillier.
The trend is pretty, feminine, and summery – so what’s not to like?

Try: Dior Long-Wearing Nail Lacquer, £16.50, in Pink Icing, Pink Boa, or Ivory.

4. Bronzed Skin
For the last couple of seasons, catwalk complexions have been nude and natural. This season, however, bronze is back… Models boasting beautifully sun-kissed complexions adorned the catwalks of Blumarine, Missoni, and Balmain – finishing the look with nude, glossy lips.

Keep skin in perfect condition with regular facials and twice-daily applications of a high-quality moisturiser. Get the bronzed look with a natural-looking bronzer, sweeping generously over cheekbones, forehead, and nose.

Try: Clarins HydraQuench Cream SPF15 Normal to Dry Skin, £26.13, and Lancaster Monaco Infinite Bronze 5-in-1 Powder Compact, £29.62.
