Snow Problem.. Your Ski Sun Protection Sorted

If you’re lucky enough to be jetting off to the piste this winter, make sure you’re well protected. It’s easy to think that the cooler, snowy environment means that there is little need for sun protection. However, the higher altitude and the extremely reflective surface of the snow make for a potent sun trap – and if you’re not careful, you could get burned.

Every part of your body that is exposed on the slopes should be slathered with an SPF. Take a look at our pick of sun protection products and make sure your holiday isn’t hampered by the lobster reds!

If you’re a frequent skiier, you’ll know that one of the first things to turn pink is your nose. Prevent the peel right from the first day with the highly effective La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50+ Stick, £10.00. Water resistant and hard-wearing, this high protection stick is easy to apply and can be stashed away in your pocket to top up your defence every couple of hours.

Adequate sun protection often means making a sacrifice in the make-up department. There are, however, two ingenious sun protection products that let you have the best of both worlds! The HissyFit Facing Face Foundation, £18.80 is a creamy formulation for maximum coverage with an impressive SPF of 50+. It’s available in a range of different tones, and has a buildable texture to conceal blemishes with ease. If you’re already on to a winner with your normal foundation, then make sure you still have adequate protection with the Clarins UV Plus Protective Day Screen SPF 40, £28.00. Smooth onto skin, wait a few minutes, and then apply your make-up as usual.

Cracked, sore lips are common on the slopes. The change in altitude means that lips are far dryer – but don’t lick them, it’ll make even more parched and will just continue the cycle. Instead, smooth on some Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25, £7.25 with its rich blend of shea butter, essential oils and green tea. Its SPF of 25 protects against sun damage and premature aging, and it’s colour and fragrance free to suit even the most sensitive of mouths.

Even though it is your face that it most at risk there are other parts of your body that can are constantly exposed to the sun, such as the neck and the wrists. Spritz on some Avène Very High Protection Spray SPF50+, £18.35 with its water resistance, maximum protection and easy to apply formulation. It’s not just skin that suffers in the sun; your hair is also exposed, with the sun beating down on it constantly. This can really dry it out, so make sure that you protect it with an SPF formulation such as the Schwarzkopf Professional BC Bonacure Sun Protect Spray Conditioner, £7.10. It is a lightweight spray that not only conditions hair, but offers complete protection from free radicals, UV rays and sun exposure.

Sometimes, mistakes happen. If you skip protection and your skin is burned and sore, reach for an intensive recovery emulsion. The Vichy Capital Soleil After Sun Balm, £10.50 is suitable for all skintypes, even the most sensitive, and contains Epilode extract, an active lipid concentrate that soothes and restores the protective function of the skin. Intensely rehydrating and very soft and smooth, the balm will sort out redness in 24 hours.
