Despite having long, straight hair, I rarely do anything with it. It’s usually worn loose around my shoulders, with a clip to keep it off my face. I occasionally pull it back into a ponytail, but that is usually for convenience – during exercise, whilst walking the dog in the rain, or simply because I didn’t have time to wash it…
For somebody that works in the world of hair and beauty, this is poor form – so this season, I vowed to be more creative with my locks. Over the past few months, I have attempted to recreate the following catwalk looks – and of course it’s given me a great excuse to restock my dressing table with lots of fabulous haircare products (you didn’t think I was doing this purely for the fun of it, did you?)
SMOOTH PONYTAIL
This is my favourite hair trend for Autumn/Winter 2010, as it’s so easy to recreate! The sleek look – which was seen at shows including Calvin Klein and Jill Sandler – simply requires a little serum to keep flyaway hair at bay. I recommend Sexy Hair Silky Frizz Eliminator, £11.85. Simply comb the serum evenly through hair, pull hair back into a high ponytail, and secure with a no-snag hair band. I can manage it in a matter of seconds!
MESSY UP-DO
This look may seem easy, but it requires more effort than the sleeker look above. Firstly, you need a good texturising spray, such as Joico Design Texture Spray, £10.40. After spraying evenly through hair, pull locks back into your preferred up-do – I recommend keeping it simple with a full or half-ponytail. Don’t smooth anything down – keep it messy and haphazard, allowing strands to flick out and bumps to rise on the crown of your hair. Voila – the perfect ‘just got out of bed’ look, worth of the Missoni catwalk!
SIDE PARTING
I always wear my parting to the side – but to honour the catwalk, I have moved it even further across. The side parting – seen at Tommy Hilfiger – works with any hair length or texture. In my mind, it’s a pretty, feminine look, so I’m wearing my hair long and loose. To add a glossy shine, I’ve switched to the fabulous Tigi Bed Head Superstar Shampoo, £5.10.
SCULPTURAL BUNS
This last trend is the one that’s taken the most practice – but believe me, it’s worth it. The Sculptural Bun was seen on the catwalks of Dior and Gaultier. To work the look, start by applying strong-hold mousse to wet hair and combing through – I’m using Schwarzkopf Professional Osis+ Hold Miracle, £6.35. Rough dry your hair and pull into a ponytail on top of your head. Finally, wrap the hair around itself to create a loose bun and secure with pins. It’s dramatic, but sophisticated.
