Elie Saab Girl of Now Review

Elie Saab made fragrant waves with his first perfume ‘Le Parfum’ – an ode to radiant orange blossom created by Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian that stood out amongst its contemporaries. Le Parfum had such an impact because it elevated the craft of mainstream perfumery to something worthy of the designer name. It didn’t follow trends, nor did it feel focused grouped into blandness. What Le Parfum did do was capture the weightlessness and radiance of Elie Saab’s aesthetic, allowing for a true olfactory representation of the brand.

After the huge success of Le Parfum, Elie Saab has just launched Girl of Now, a brand new feminine fragrance that continues the olfactory odyssey of the brand. The fragrance has been created to celebrate women and their accomplishments, seizing the moment and encouraging the idea of living life to the fullest. It’s billed as a floral gourmand and as the eye catching bottle may suggest, it’s a fragrance that makes quite the statement.

Elie Saab Girl of Now Eau de Parfum

The Notes

Top: Roasted Pistachio and Pear

Heart: Bitter Almond and Orange Blossom

Base: Tonka Bean and Patchouli

How Does it Smell?

From the very first sniff, Girl of Now feels entirely new. Whilst Elie Saab’s other fragrances have all been related to the radiant signature of Le Parfum in one way or another, Girl of Now is a completely new encapsulation of the Elie Saab spirit – one that is more contemporary than luminous. The opening is green and crunchy, with the smell of zesty marzipan. There’s a surprising degree of freshness to this almost-gourmand signature in the opening and it saves the accord from being overwhelming. It feels really bold and the green twist of the marzipan is certainly going to elicit some strong responses, that’s for sure.

Whilst Le Parfum and Girl of Now could not be more different in their odour profile, there is one theme that binds the two together like sisters: the note of orange blossom. In Le Parfum, orange blossom burned with solar intensity, celebrating the radiance of Elie Saab’s designs by burning bright like a floral beacon. In Girl of Now, the impression is much more subtle – a supporting act that intensifies the gourmand nature whilst adding a dewy and refreshing air.

In the base, Girl of Now becomes much warmer. Tonka bean, with its complex profile of cherry, vanilla and hay is the kindling to the almond flames that burn so brightly throughout the fragrance. It provides a softness against all those crunchy shards of pistachios and orange blossom. Patchouli adds a touch of contrast, creating a dry quality that plays nicely into the tangy sharpness that prevails for most of Girl of Now’s development which, for the most part, is a subtle transition from almond treat to tonka delight.

Girl of Now is a divisive fragrance. The marzipan creates such a bold signature, it cements it as a fragrance that one will either love or hate, which is never a bad thing if you ask me. It strikes me as the type of fragrance for someone who wants to make an impression with their fragrance – someone who possesses an intriguing balance of conventional and unconventional beauty. Girl of Now feels more mature than Le Parfum, boasting a worldliness that feels wiser and more experienced than the naive brightness than Elie Saab’s first perfume. If this is what the Girl of Now smells like, I can’t wait to see what she has in store for the future.
