Try These Sustainable Beauty Switches!

5 Easy Sustainable Beauty Switches

8.6 million people set themselves a New Year’s resolution in 2021, but only 26% of us accomplished the goals and aspirations we set ourselves. Unfortunately, I fell into the 74% who didn’t achieve what they set out to. So, this year, I’m setting myself a goal that is both achievable and enjoyable by making some easy sustainable switches in my existing beauty routine.

Before I dive into my favourite eco-friendly beauty substitutes, which are easy to use and just as effective as the step they replaced, let’s talk about sustainable beauty and why it’s important:

What Is Sustainable Beauty?

Sustainable beauty can mean something different to each individual or brand, but I view the overarching aim of sustainable beauty as an attempt to minimise the long-term environmental impact of skincare and makeup products. It’s about reducing the environmental impact of your routine throughout the entire creation process – from start to finish, including everything from sourcing to packaging. Each step of the way, your carbon footprint is considered.

According to Zero Waste, the beauty industry produces more than 120 billion units of packaging each year. The majority of our beauty favourites come packaged in plastic with leaflets, sleeves and decorative wrappings, some of which can take around 100 years to decompose. But, it’s not all doom and gloom; around 96% of beauty lovers want to help the planet, and this is beginning to be reflected within the beauty industry.

If you’re part of this majority and you’re not sure where to start, you’re in the right place: try these 5 easy switches for a more eco-friendly beauty routine…

1. Switch Up Your Deodorant

Nuxe Organic 24HR Fresh Feel Deodorant Balm

Start your new year feeling fresh with the Nuxe Organic 24HR Fresh-Feel Deodorant Balm, a creamy and buttery formula infused with a blend of botanical powders and natural oils; this clever little balm doesn’t sacrifice on performance, providing up to 24 hours of underarm protection. Formulated with 100% natural origin ingredients, the Nuxe Fresh-Feel Deodorant projects a sweet, clean orange blossom scent, which will elevate your daily routine, providing all-day freshness in an instant. Unlike other deodorant bars I’ve tried, this rich and non-sticky texture effortlessly sweeps across the underarms without leaving a white or yellow residue, so you can slip on your favourite black or white top without fear.

The perfect eco-friendly alternative to plastic roll-ons or aerosol deodorants, the vegan-friendly formula is created using organic methods which meet strict COSMOS standards relating to sustainability. As if that wasn’t good enough, the balm is also housed within a 100% recyclable aluminium jar, which looks as good as it is for the planet.

How do you use the Nuxe Deodorant Balm?
There’s no waiting required when it comes to this balm! Apply a small amount of the deodorant onto your fingertips and apply like cream by blending it onto your underarm, popping on your clothes straight after use.

2. Swap Out Your Body Wash

Tisserand Aromatherapy Lavender & Neroli Soothing Hand & Body Soap

Switching out your liquid body wash for a soap bar is the perfect starting block for anyone new to green beauty who wants to cut down their plastic usage. One of my favourite cleansing bars of the moment is the Tisserand Lavender & Neroli Soothing Hand & Body Soap; expertly blended by leading aromatherapists, the organic formula uses 100% natural pure essential oils to coat your skin in a soothing, delicate foam that leaves your skin addictively soft to touch. The luxuriously creamy, vegan soap bar works alongside the comforting aromas of lavender and peppermint to add a boost of vitality to your cleansing routine.

Wondering what the best bit is? It’s completely plastic-free! Tisserand’s Hand & Body Soap is housed within a 100% FSC certified cardboard box that’s been printed using vegetable-based inks. This means that the box is completely compostable and recyclable, so you can enjoy minimal impact with maximum cleansing results.

How do you use the Tisserand Hand & Body Soap?
Massage into damp skin to create a silky lather, making sure you inhale the soothing aroma of Tisserand’s essential oils before rinsing with water.

3. Substitute Your Shampoo

Klorane Oat Shampoo Bar For All Hair Types

If you’re looking to turn over a new leaf, another great eco-conscious switch to make is swapping your shampoo bottle for an eco-friendly alternative, like the Klorane Oat Shampoo Bar. The 2-in-1 biodegradable formula blends natural oat seeds and milk for a high-performance formula, which is rich in lipids and vitamins, leaving hair incredibly silky smooth and soft to the touch. Cultivated to respect Organic Agriculture Standards, the oats used have a high pediatric tolerance, making them gentle enough for the whole family to enjoy.

I’ll be the first to admit, this switch felt the most daunting to me due to the format difference from a liquid to a bar – but all it took was one use to see how easy it is and change my mind. The biodegradable formula easily creates a nourishing lather, which leaves behind a refreshed and clean feeling, whilst offering twice as many washes as a 200ml liquid shampoo. So, if you’re setting yourself a goal to save money and be more eco-conscious during 2022, this vegan shampoo bar can help with both of your aims.

How do you use the Klorane Shampoo Bar?
Work into a lather by rubbing in between your hands until you have enough foam to cover your locks. Use the suds as you would with a liquid shampoo by massaging them into the scalp before rinsing thoroughly.

4. Trade-In Your Makeup Wipes

Real Techniques Reusable Makeup Remover Pads

Makeup wipes are the 3rd most wasteful product in the world, with over one billion wipes used each day! Ditch the single-use wipes with the Real Techniques Reusable Makeup Remover Pads, an eco-friendly beauty favourite to reduce your wastage and save your pennies. The soft and fluffy cloth is dual-sided, with one side targeting liquid formulas and the other combating oils and powder.

Whether you’re using water alone or leaning on your favourite makeup remover, you can say goodbye to stubborn makeup in an easy sweep with RT’s Reusable Makeup Remover Pads; the dual-textured pad helps to break down tough formulas, leaving skin fresh and clean. Each set comes with two multi-use pads, which can be washed again and again, so you’re never left without. The best bit is that the number of uses are endless; I’ve been using mine for around a year and they still offer effortless makeup removal even now.

How do you use the Real Techniques Reusable Pads?
Saturate your chosen pad with either warm water or your favourite makeup remover, gently scrubbing the face in circular motions; follow with your cleanser (bonus point if it’s from step 5) to remove any excess residue.

5. Replace Your Cleanser

Florena Cleansing Bar

Ring in the new year with the Florena Cleansing Bar, an eco-friendly alternative to bottled facial wash, which doesn’t skimp on performance. Crafted with 100% natural origin ingredients, in accordance with strict COSMOS guidelines, the cleansing bar gently removes dirt and imperfections for a revitalised, soft-to-touch complexion. Tested and approved by dermatologists, the soap has the same pH balance as the skin (5.5), so even sensitive complexions can be kinder to the planet.

A perfect plastic-free switch, Florena’s sustainability commitments are carried through each stage of this vegan facial cleanser’s lifecycle – from transport and storage all the way through to the recyclable paper box, which is crafted from 70% recycled paper.

How do you use the Florena Cleansing Bar?
Wet your hands with water before working the bar between your palms to create a lather. Using the soft foam, cleanse your face before rinsing with water.
