To find out a little more about the awesome Vintage Shaving Company range, we asked Creative Director, Dan Johnson all about the inspiration behind the products – and it turns out that there was a lot more than shaving involved in the process!….

What was your inspiration for the brand?
We wanted to create something that brought back the traditions of Gentlemen, when we had time enough to go to a barbers and it was a real event, something to enjoy and not a daily chore in between your alarm clock and your Shreddies. But we wanted to bring it to the 21st century, using naturally blended formulations with active ingredients and environmentally considerate packaging. It was important to us to build a brand and not just a collection of products with no real direction and personality. And of course, with the image for the brand we took inspiration from design, film and music from the Vintage eras – largely the 50s and 60s. It was a fun process!

What makes VSC’s products different?
So many things! The environmental message behind the brand is a key feature for us, and the environment is close to all of our hearts at Vintage. The focus on creating naturally blended formulations without compromising their effectiveness was a must that so many brands overlook. We also wanted to ensure the products were affordable, luxury in every aspect but without breaking the bank. We’ve also put a lot of thought in to the details within the design, so when you buy one look carefully and you’ll start to pick them up. And of course, they look pretty cool on your bathroom shelf too!

Your two fragrances smell amazing – how did you go about developing these?
We’ve worked within the fragrance industry for years and years, so know what we like and what doesn’t work. That said, it still took us about 18 months to develop the Mod and Trad fragrances to where we wanted them. As is typical with our brand, we wanted two directions moving opposite of each other. We wanted something that was the very definition of a traditional men’s cologne, hard hitting citrus with long lasting effect. However, with Mod we wanted to create something that had never been done before; blending citrus and spearmint with florals and woods is a completely new direction, and has proved our most popular fragrance! We actually get stopped all the time and asked what we’re wearing which is a great endorsement (although it’s probably because we put so much on!).

Your brand is now available nationwide (and at Escentual) how does that make you feel?
Yep, this is definitely the most exciting part for us! We’re very proud of the reception the brands had by press, retailers and customers alike so far, and we’re all really looking forward to expanding the range, so watch this space! Next up is Hair for the Autumn, and an international roll out. We’ve also been researching some great whiskies for a new project which I can’t divulge too much about just yet, but obviously been a very enjoyable experience, from what we can remember!

Your newsletter asks for our first record purchase – what are you going to do with this (embarrassing) information?
TOP SECRET I’m afraid. But we have got a plan, which doesn’t involve naming or shaming, we promise!

What was your first record purchase?
Cheeky! Well I know my partners in Vintage were infinitely more hip hop and happening than me. Lee started his life long love of music with Bros (sorry mate!), and Annabel kicked off with the significantly cooler Sioxsie and the Banshees’ Dear Prudence. Mine was no doubt something terrible, Ace of Base maybe! Thankfully I later discovered the Stones!!
