How We're Wearing The Autumn 2018 Makeup Trends
Share
Rewind back to March and we had our first glimpse of what makeup in A/W 2018 was going to look like. Back then autumn felt like a lifetime away, but it’s just around the corner now and personally, I can’t wait. Don’t get me wrong, I love summer, but there’s a big place in my heart for chunky knits, pumpkin spice lattes (yes, I’m that girl) and of course, autumn makeup.
Year after year we generally welcome back darker tones into our makeup bag for this season, but this time around there’s a twist. For fall 2018, we’re seeing bright eyes, smokiness and a big emphasis on statement looks. And even though all of that sounds great, it doesn’t scream wearable, does it? But that’s where this post comes in. In a bid to ensure we’re all as ‘on-trend’ as possible for the months ahead, I’ve made it my mission to make my favourite trends appropriate for everyday wear.
#1 Smoky Eyes
If you’ve never mastered a smoky eye, this one’s for you, because it’s a smoky eye made easy. Of course, a smoky eye isn’t anything new but it’s definitely one I spotted time and time again on the A/W 2018 runways (my favourite being Max Mara and Tom Ford). The difference this year was a clear punk edge. Everything was a little undone and messy, which is great for any smoky eye beginners!
My favourite way to create a smoky eye is also the easiest. I use a kohl liner, and my go-to at the moment is the MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Pencil in 100 – Whatever Black. Just trace the liner along the upper lash-line, then blend out the edges with a smudger brush; Artist Pencils are really creamy and pigmented, so the result is a beautifully diffused smoky eye that has an element of grunge to it.
#2 Inner Corner Highlight
This is a trend I’ll happily add to my makeup routine every day! Designers like Fendi and Tommy Hilfiger were using matte and shimmer white eyeshadows in the inner corner to open up eyes and the results were beautiful. This simple step will instantly make you look more awake and your eyes will appear larger.
By day, a shimmery inner corner highlight may be a bit much for some, so I recommend trying the MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua XL Color Paint in M16 like I have above. The white, cream eyeshadow has a matte finish and very subtly breathes light into the corner of the eye. You can wear this very subtly, or build pigment to create what I think is a very fresh editorial look.
#3 Statement Liner
Eye Liner, in my opinion, was the standout trend of the A/W 2018 catwalk shows. Everyone was using it in some shape or form! Dior was lining model’s eyes with vivid colour, while the Jeremy Scott runway showcased futuristic eyes dressed in graphic liner; it’s safe to say there were many steady hands backstage at this years shows!
Liner is a makeup tool that can instantly give your makeup look a modern edge, especially if you go graphic. Although I’m still a huge fan of a traditional black cat flick, this season I’m going to experiment more with coloured liner. It may seem scary, but choose the right shade and it can make your eyes subtly pop. The Benefit’s they’re Real! Push-Up Liner in Beyond Green is one I love, as it really complements my brown eyes.
