6 Products You Need In Your Autumn Makeup Bag
Share
Just like a bikini may not fair you well outside of summer, some makeup items are best suited to specific seasons. In summer, it’s all about light formulas and pastel hues, while in autumn, higher coverage textures are preferred and rich, bold colours are celebrated. This is why I always recommend a seasonal makeup bag shake-up. Not only does this ensure you’re using the best products for the time of the year, but it’s also the perfect excuse (if you need one) to buy something new! Here are the 6 makeup items that made the cut…
#1 MAKE UP FOR EVER Matte Velvet Skin Foundation
First things first, foundation. This is the most common thing people switch up in autumn moving away from lighter textures and opting for something with a fuller coverage and more of a matte skin finish.
One that I recommend you try this season is a relatively new launch from MAKE UP FOR EVER, the Matte Velvet Skin Foundation. What’s special about this base is that despite its long-wearing, pigment-rich formula it’s extremely comfortable and adapts with your skin as you wear it. It does this with a FLEX-FIT mesh complex and long-lasting micro and film powders, which work in tandem to help skin breathe through your foundation – a must-have in autumn/winter when you’re going from the freezing cold to warm heating. See all the swatches, plus a before and after of it here.
#2 Shiseido Minimalist WhippedPowder Blush
This autumn/winter the weather may be dull but your complexion doesn’t need to be. And the best way to keep your skin’s healthy look long after summer is with blush. It’s a quick and easy step that makes the world of difference.
Instead of opting for your usual powder format, I suggest trying the new Shiseido Minimalist WhippedPowder Blush this season. The mousse texture melts effortlessly into skin leaving a natural flush of colour that’s both long-lasting and comfortable. One of my favourites is Sayoko (pictured above), its wine-plum hue looks amazing with nude smoky eyes and deep lipstick shades.
#3 Yves Saint Laurent La Laque Couture Nail Lacquer
If there’s a time for dark nails it’s now. Our wardrobes will naturally become darker as the year goes on (or if you’re like me black is your go-to in all year round), so it makes sense that our nails match.
Darker doesn’t have to mean flat black though, there are a plethora of autumn-appropriate nail colours waiting for you on Escentual. One that deserves a special mention, however, is the Yves Saint Laurent La Laque Couture Nail Lacquer in 28 Bronze Aztec. This black shade has an olive green/bronze shift and golden shimmer throughout it that looks beautiful when caught in the light. It’s a great happy medium; subtle enough to not be over the top but also eye-catching enough to make a luxurious, well put together statement.
#4 Urban Decay Naked Cherry Eyeshadow Palette
There’s no doubt about it, the Cherry Palette is the makeup product of the season. Everyone’s either talking about it, lusting after it or wearing it. I know which I’d rather be doing!
The 12-piece palette is a part of the iconic Naked Palette franchise and presents an autumn-inspired shade line-up with everything from metallic cranberry to chocolatey plum hues. Inside there’s a mixture of matte and shimmer finishes, plus a dual-ended brush that’ll help you pack on pigment and blend.
If there’s only one addition to your makeup bag this season, let it be this. See all the shades swatched right here.
#5 DIOR Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge Lipstick
Burgundy, plum, crimson red – all my favourite autumn lipsticks shades are decidedly dark. If there’s one thing I can always confidently predict is that vampy hues will swing back around every fall.
This year, I have found my go-to in the DIOR Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge Lipstick in 641 – Ultra Spice. This brown-red isn’t so dark that it drains any colour from my complexion, but it definitely has a richness that’s completely in keeping with my autumn wardrobe. Another bonus to this luxe lipstick (apart from its jaw-dropping packaging) is that it has a nourishing texture that stops lips drying out – a must-have in the colder months. You can see all the Ultra Rouge Lipsticks swatched here.
#6 GIVENCHY Dual Liner – Two Tone Eyeshadow & Liner
I think it’s fair to say that makeup is easier in spring/summer; you’re often working with lighter formulas and softer colours. This almost gets flipped in autumn. Pigment is increased and shades become deeper, which means there’s less room for error. That’s why I choose products that are foolproof at this time of year or give the impression that what I’ve achieved requires more skill than it actually did.
Cue GIVENCHY Dual Liner – Two Tone Eyeshadow & Liner. This all-in-one shadow and liner isn’t only multi-purpose heaven but it’s so quick and effortless to use that anyone, no matter their makeup skill, could use it. The angled crayon contains two shades (rich brown and red for 01 – Mystic Red, and light brown and gold in 02 -Mystic Gold). All you have to do is glide the crayon across the eyelid (make sure the liner shade is closest to the lashes) and voila you’re eyeliner and eyeshadow is done. Blend the edges with your fingertip and you’re all set.
