10 Things We Learnt About Skin Ageing From Vichy

nightinwithescentual: how to fight skin ageing with chelsey and janette from vichy

Ageing is always a popular skincare topic; nobody wants wrinkles. Are you taking the appropriate steps to fight against skin sagging, age spots and wrinkles? If you’re wondering what those steps are, this #NightInWithEscentual is definitely one for you to catch-up on.

I asked Janette, Head of Education at Vichy to join me live to discuss how and why we age; but most importantly, what we can do to stop it. Here’s what I learnt from her incredible advice.

New to Vichy? Vichy is a French skincare was developed by a Dr, Dr Haller in 1931; during his time as director of the Vichy Thermal Spa, he discovered the healing powers of the mineralising volcanic water, which, nearly 9o years later lead to the incredible skincare range we see on our shelves today.

Our Topic: How To Fight Ageing

1. 20% of ageing is natural.

This is called chronological ageing, and what this means is how old you are and the metabolism of your cells. For example, when you reach the age of 25, you lose 1% of collagen production.

2. 80% of ageing is down to our lifestyle.

Ultimately, you’re responsible for looking after your skin and health; however, UV is the number one culprit for ageing your skin, so it’s imperative to use a broad-spectrum SPF 50 every day.

3. You’re likely to experience 80% of UV damage before the age of 18.

This is probably pigmentation started to appear in your 20s. Always encourage sun safety from a young age, and wear a broad-spectrum SPF50 from now on. If you’re looking to brighten your skin, and smooth its texture, vitamin C and retinol should be in your routine. Read more about both skincare actives.

4. Make sure you have broad-spectrum sun protection in your routine.

Make sure they have the UVA (a is for ageing) circle on the bottle; SPF50+, SPF50, or SPF 30 will be best.

5. Make skincare decisions based on your skin’s age, not your biological age.

Customers often ask what age should you start using anti-ageing products; as you read above, everyone’s skin will age differently due to lifestyle choices. If you feel your skin looks older due to sun exposure, wrinkles and age spots, use the products you feel necessary, for example, neck creams. The neck is less oily than the skin on your face, so the barrier is weaker, meaning it will age quicker.

6. Your eye area will show fine lines and wrinkles first.

The skin around your eyes is 4 to 5 times thinner than your skin on your face; you also don’t have much collagen, elastin or moisture around your eyes, so it dehydrates quicker, forming fine lines. Your skin is made up of 700ml of water, and you lose 350ml a day – hydration and protection are key!

7. Expression lines are the first signs of ageing.

If you can see horizontal lines when you express yourself, it’s a sign you need to start using anti-ageing products (only if it’s a concern for you).

8. Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and retinol are key ingredients for slowing the ageing process.

Find out the essentials of using these skincare actives.

9. It’s never too late to start protecting your skin from ageing.

All you need to do is be clear on your skincare concern, and use the correct skincare actives to fight them. Need help? Tweet me, we can go through it on a one to one video call or meet.
